"Solar is Civil Defense"

A coalition of bottom-up inventors, hobbyists, and activists have come together to promote the value of distributed, personal solar power to a nation hungry for energy. Led by groups like Mister Franklin's Folks (see http://www.superstructgame.org/StoryView/65), these solar power advocates offer demonstrations, technical advice, and a big-picture view of the importance of solar energy. Unlike many solar specialists, they are technology agnostics, and will happily offer assistance with integrating solar-electric power with a biofuel vehicle, a hydrogen fuel cell home power system, or even a old-style biomass (i.e., wood) heating system. According to group participants, the goal is more information than direct advocacy -- they claim that the information alone is sufficient to change minds.

Although much of the emphasis of these groups is on energy sufficiency and a cleaner personal footprint, many of them see a broader purpose.

"With all of the emergencies and potential emergencies we face today, we can't afford not to think about clean, renewable energy production as a key element of personal and community security," argued one of Mister Franklin's Folks.

"Ultimately, solar is civil defense."
