New Orleans Diaspora Launches Virtual Museum

Deanna January, former mayor of New Orleans and Internet security entrepreneur, announced today the opening of the virtual Museum of New Orleans Culture. Through its web site, the museum will collect and share oral histories, musical recordings, and digital archives of documents and photographs. The “reunification portal” will help friends and families separated in the most recent evacuation reconnect with each other.

“Museums don’t just commemorate the past,” said Ms. January “they nurture and revitalize living communities. Cities across the country have taken our scattered New Orleans family, over 100 thousand here in Houston alone. We thank the Lord for these new homes, these new neighbors, but we cherish our culture and traditions, and will not let them die. Long before the Museum of New Orleans Culture has a physical presence, it will be a living part of the daily lives of our community—helping teach and transmit our traditions of food, music, family, our way of life, helping unite us across the country.”
