GEAS ASSESSMENT OF SUPERSTRUCT/QUARANTINE
The Quarantine superthreat is unusual in that it has both a proximate focus (the ReDS pandemic) and a broad focus (pandemic outbreaks in general). ReDS is insufficient to trigger an extinction scenario, but the institutions and practices we implement for this first post-industrial, global pandemic will strongly influence how we deal with subsequent global disease outbreaks.
Many of the Quarantine-related superstructures have focused on information, including early warnings, diagnosis, and risk assessment. GEAS models suggest that this is an appropriate response, as it is generalizable beyond ReDS. One wildcard remains: How to avoid engineered pandemics while embracing the responsive power of open bioscience.
