Transgenic Contamination In Winter Wheat
A spokesperson for the Canadian Agricultural Foundation today answered questions about reports that the current winter wheat crop had been contaminated with transgenic varieties.
"We have examined approximately 10% of the Canadian crop, and about a third of that crop shows some level of transgenic contamination. We intend to examine every field used to grow wheat to determine the degree and origin of these transgenic plants."
The spokesperson had no comment on rumors that the transgenic variety was previously unknown, and not traceable to any current controlled fields.
"There's a real fear that someone will decide to introduce an aggressive bioengineered form of a basic crop, and that it will overtake the traditional varieties," noted Dani Carosen, a specialist in the politics of biotechnology. "All it would take is a small group, even a single person, with a moderately advanced lab and a political agenda."
