Starting a superstructure is only the beginning. The real task is envisioning what it can do, how it will work, and who you need to work with. If you're not a member, consider joining now. If you are a member, be bold, jump in, and use the superstructure to start organizing for survival. Edit it, add to the vision, and make it real, online and off. And don't forget to rave.

  • The New Pony Express

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will stop us from developing a new postal system

  • Who We Need
We need talented network thinkers, geographers, and everyone who wants to send things to friends, allies or collaborators across the world.
  • How to join
How can we coordinate the sending, distribution and receiving of letters, parcels, and packages on a global scale?
  • Mission
Infomation moves, people move, trade goods move.  How can we move the mail?People to people communication is easy, moving specific parcels to specific people is hard, especially with the nonfunctionality of local governments.  We want to develop a reliable, GPS-enabled system for transporting things from individuals or groups to other individuals or groups.  We need to develop postal transportation networks, corridors and right-of-ways.  We also need to guarantee the security of the mail and of our carriers, human, animal and machine.  This group must cultivate the trust of the world community to enable the free flow of the mail.  A functional postal system could facilitate problem-solving for all of the superthreats.

      • Who We Need

Anybody with anything, who is willing to trade in order to keep the concept moving in the general direction of the end exchange. It works a little like www.swaptree.com did in the earlier part of this century. If you read the book One Red Paperclip, it could go a little like that as well. No money is ever exchanged - just stuff.

We could really use having someone set up an exchange database of some kind. Now that the algorithims are ever so improved over what we had ten years ago, this should be shild's play for one of you geniuses!

      • How to join
      • Mission We network to form a ginormous new fangled eBay where through a series of exchanges someone from the east coast can give a gift to someone on the west coast via a series of face to face exchanges made countrywide until the final swap is done on the end. It's an esoteric pony express because though someone may want to send a bouquet of flowers to their mother, what happens is a bouquest of flowers might be exchanged for a meatloaf, which gets exchanged for a bale of hay, which becomes a pair of shoes, etc etc noodling its way throughout the countryside ever getting closer to the end recipient, wherein the final exchange is made, maybe a book for a bouquet of flowers.

If the new postal system is used to send seeds, will postal carriers be smugglers?  How can a postal system cross borders and navigate the evolving patchworks of laws around bioinformation?

What kind of network do we want to create?  Is a P2P network practicable when everyone is on the move?  Should we set up community-based mail drops?

What energy resources do we need to deliver the mail?  What kinds of transportation should we use?  Boat, train, plane, van, bicycle, balloon?

How about the couriers (whoever they may be and however they may travel) carry wifi/bluetooth trasmitters while they move about delivering real parcels and letters?  These devices would push information/news to receivers within the sphere of their transit.  If we could provide non-networked villages/individuals with an access-point or basic individual units that can receive data and even return data to the courier\\\'s device, we could create a peripatetic network amongst the non-integrated communities of the world.  The more couriers, the more coverage...

The "post boxes" could be virtual as well as actual, if secure data has to be transported the following method may be useful - the courier arrives at the location, this may or may not have an actual marker indicating the post box, they then point the webphone (chinese copy, 4th gen, heavily hacked and using some kind of encryption) at the box once the phone has confirmed it's ident the information is squirted to the phone and is ready to be delivered. The same method could also leave data for other couriers / customers for later collection, too complicated or some use?
