    The Long Game exists to engage players in fun, challenging and meaningful play that has real impact on timescales spanning 10, 100, and 1000 years. Gameplay will encourage people to develop new skills, literacies and perspectives for thinking and acting with a long term mindset. Time invested in building in-game skills will have positive return in players’ lives – for example, we aspire for achievements (e.g., badges, reputation points) earned in the game to become recognized professional credentials. We hope players will become a long lasting community of collaborators with a tradition of long term thinking, action and playfulness.

    • If you put $1 into an investment that has an average real return of 2% per year after inflation and taxes, in 1000 years it would be worth almost $400 million. If you thought you could get 3% return, it would grow to nearly $7 trillion! Now think about what your descendents 30 generations in the future might be able to do with such capital -- and think about how you might communicate your wishes to them.

      Now consider how we might invest our non-financial capital -- intellectual, natural, social, familial, genetic -- in such a way that it compounded its value over time. Such a rich gift we could endow for the future of humanity...

    • The Long Game runs counter to what may have led to our current dire crises. For decades, children were educated in school curriculums which promoted short contained assignments and single page handouts to be completed for homework. Tasks were so learning target specific that students lost the skills to make interconnections and to see the big picture. Every assignment was just another hoop to jump through. The Long Game provides learning spaces which promote sustained engagement. Learners become invested in growing and nurturing something and are able to see and feel the development of an intellectual idea or artifact. Great inventions and truly creative ventures are only possible through extended collaborative and enduring practices. The Long Game may well be one cure for our current unsustainable quick-fix predicament.
