Alternative Energies.

Educational Debate
Doctor Ridding

The 11 most important words you'll hear in your lifetime:

What on earth are we going to do about the oil??

As an aviation analyst, i am looking for oppertunities to move forward with the industry, away from fossil fuels, and towards a better brighter, cleaner, and above all cheaper future!

Which type of energy is best?

Nuclear

As far as not polluting the air goes, Nuclear power is almost perfect! the only problem is the waste. We have enough nuclear raw material to last hundreds of years, but what do we do with the waste?? blast it off into space? Until fusion (the clean one) is perfected, we only have fission (the slightly dirty one)

Hydroelectric

Hydroelectric power has been around for decades, and has proved to be a very worthy method of producing energy.hydroelectricity is produced from flowing water, such as rivers and dams, to produce electricity.

The Wind?

For hundreds of years we have harnessed the power of the wind, but on a global scale, the likelyhood of wind providing enough energy is doubted...

Wave/tidal

Surfing to success... Wave power works in theory, but the task of building the huge and highly expensive under-water devices needed is often too much for a govornment or council to undertake.

Geothermal

HOT!!!...Geothermal energy is about harnessing the power of the earths heat! but is it really possible to create enough energy this way to supply even one billion people on this planet?

Sunny

The future is bright... Solar energy, a major possibility, the only problem is the price of the equipment, and cloudy days!

Biomass (wood)

Biomass, burning trees. is this the way forward? how can this be acheived viably? huge plantations? trees grow slowly... unless we give them a helping hand with their genetics?

Chip fat!

Biofuels are a major oppertunity, they were popular once, but will they make a comeback?

so which is best? in terms of both economic viability, and environmental viability.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a human race, we thrive on knowledge and power. for centuries this alone has been our downfall, and our most valuable ally.

Now is the time for us to rise from this dark point, and to come up stronger than ever, for it is when we are cornered that we are at our strongest.

----

My theory:

I have created a superstructure that brings about a harmony between those who seek cheap fuel, and those who seek food and medecine. there is a definite link between the two, and it is undeniable. There is a section of my superstructure which outlines a plan, it is fully editable and debatable. please join and tell me your opinions.

thankyou, the doc.

Solar power has the potential to save mankind, we have developed new technology recently, one square metre of solar panel can give enough energy to power a house on its own, even on the dullest of days!

We need to act fast, nuclear power is the only economically viable route. we have the technology, we have the facilities, what are we waiting for? we could double, even triple the earths energy output with nuclear power in one year! and if fusion was possible on a massive scale, we would have the resources to power the world for 150 BILLION years!!! using deuterium in seawater. but this technology is not yet available to us. the theory works. but we havnt got a clear concept or plan yet.

Like Zep said, Nuclear Power is probably the way forward. research into fusion is absolutely essential!!!!!!!!!!

everyone need to realise that the world not a massive energy resourse. it has not many way of creating the energy but has many oppertunity to do so. in thousand of year, humans will be alive if only they can control they action! fuel will run out very soon so in long run we need method to make energy for free, that method is definitely the sun. sun makes many times more energy that we need every day! harness it and we will be OK.

surely, we can combine a hydroelectric system to coincide with mass food manufacture somehow?

I never knew what biomass was. can i join your superstructure? i know people who know people! :-p

I just caught an archived broadcast from 2008, where it was claimed that enough sunlight fell on Australia in a single day to power the Earth for a whole year. Sounds like we need to consider how to carpet the Antipodean manland in solar panels and find a reliable way to pipe the power to the rest of the the world...

We've had cheaper-than-coal solar energy since last decade... it's taken a while to scale, but it's clearly the right answer. I mean, hell, look at these numbers http://vinay.howtolivewiki.com/blog/global/the-age-of-cheap-solar-energy-now-to-be-precise-738 That is *ten year old data* - why the government's didn't choose to back the hell out of expanding these technologies I just don't know...

All are needed. We need to invest in every single one of them, even if any of them is lacking in plausible profitability - we need to develop the technological understanding to see which option will work, even if it doesnt work right now... however... in the long run only solar has unlimited growth potential. You can keep adding solar most everywhere on earth, even in cold and cloudy places. Personally if we make it, I anticipate large sections of easily accessible deserts will be paved over with solar farms by 2075.

In the long run (2100+) fusion will be the solution, plus space-based solar. Nuclear is only a temporary solution as fissionable are an exhaustible resource pretty soon. However - if we focus on fusion then lunar He3 will be a very attractive resource very very soon. So - will that trigger a Moon Rush?

Living in a country thet has over 320 days of sunlight and working for an architect firm, I am astonished that only now do I see solar panels being introduced into our designs. What I have noticed though is that the government does not make it easy or affordable to install such systems. I suggest that government does not involve itself in trying to profit from these installations. I say anyone building a new house or office block, be given the option to install solar panels as an exterior to the building. Not needing to connect to the power grid as is required here in cyprus. All properties should be self contained and maintained by there respective owners. Also such systems should be affordable. In cyprus we have pipes running in a grid in an aluminium casing with a glass side facing the sky for sunlight. Only the water that is in those pipes is heated by the sun. In winter, we electrically heat the water. Electricity we pay very dearly for. I vote solar systems affordable for everyone.

Solar power is definitely an important road for us to go down, as lord samwise pointed out, each day we have the potential to generate enough energy to power the world for a long period of time. if we had the foresight, financial govornment backing, and planning permission, we could harness this power within a couple of years. solar energy can be converted to electrical power, which can then be piped through ocean power lines to connect the whole world up to the same grid. that way, poverty stricken land will have the same resources to help itself to success, this will mean the end of famine and disease in third world countries especially. energy is key.

The best energy source is using the one that will work best with the surrounding environment. Hydroelectricity, wave and tidal power near the coasts. Solar where it's sunny, etc. A combination could be used and produced that would give us clean reliable renewable energy. In addition however, we need to watch our own actions and make sure we are using our resources wisely.
